Water is an essential and practical need for every human being. Having access to clean water is a right for all human beings, and as fellow Muslims, it is our responsibility to help those who need clean drinking water.
Similarly, charity is one of Islam's highly rewarded acts of worship. It is mentioned several times in the holy Quran, and one of the benefits of increasing charity is that your wealth increases by giving charity and helps to erase sins. Begin by framing charity and access to clean water as essential pillars of compassion, justice, and social responsibility in Islam.
WHAT DOES THE QURAN SAY ABOUT CHARITY?
Charity known as Sadaqah is done in various ways, and it is a core value of Islam. As stated in the Quran:
"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] that sprouts seven ears; in every ear is a hundred grains." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261)
As mentioned above, by giving to others, you receive immense rewards that are multiplied. By making the intention of asking for forgiveness of Allah or good health and wealth, giving charity to those who are needy multiples the reward you get. It is a means of purifying your wealth and removing sins before Allah.
Sadaqah Jaariya
This is known as an ongoing charity that is given to anyone around you and can be given in different ways, such as donating the Quran or gifting water, giving others knowledge and basic necessities that they deserve.
WHAT DOES THE QURAN MENTION ABOUT WATER?
"And We made from water every living thing." (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30)
This part of an ayah highlights the importance of water and how it is needed for the survival of all the creation of Allah, be it humans or animals. It is to be noted that the provision of water is sacred. As Muslims, we should not waste water and give it to those in need.
The Act of Providing Water as Charity
The act of giving, especially from what we value or need ourselves, is highly rewarded by Allah. Giving clean drinking water to others shows empathy and sacrifice.
It is a social responsibility and a spiritual need to give others what we possess. As mentioned in a hadith:
“The best form of charity is giving someone water to drink.”
